7 Things You Should Know For Choosing The Cruise

February 27th, 2008 Olga Pizza

“They were on the wrong cruise line.” As a rule, Cruise Holidays agents say such things when we are not satisfied with our cruising.

160 ships in the fleets of the 24 major cruise lines and more than 7,500 itineraries… Well, there are really a lot of things to choose from. And sometimes it is not so easy to do. What cabin is best for you? What ship will be most appropriate for your family? Should you care about all these things at all? I offer you 7 steps which help you to plan your trip and really enjoy such an adventure.

1. Where to go. It should be your first thing to consider, the ship is second. Asia, the Indian Ocean, South America, Alaska or Caribbean. This year South America is considered to be the most popular place, but still let’s not forget about Dubai with its amazing views. Check the routes which the company offers you. Thus, Alaskan cruises follow two routes: Passage itineraries (a journey from Seattle or Vancouver to southern Alaskan ports like Skagway) and Gulf of Alaska itineraries (one-way trips from Vancouver to Seward). Every cruises offer you several routes, so, choose the best.

2. When to go. Of course, everything depends on your character and state of health, but still choose shoulder seasons. In this case, you have the opportunity to enjoy the mild wind of the sea than bake under the August sun. By the way, in the Mediterranean it is not so pleasant. The other thing is whether you are traveling with family or not. May and September, when children are in school, allows you to enjoy the cruise with less visitors… and better deals ;)

3. What line is best. So, here is the main question. What are the things you should pay attention to while choosing it? What is the difference? There are lines which have dress codes and assigned seating times for meals. If you just want to relax from the conventionalities, Norwegian Cruise Line is considered to be more casual than other cruise lines. Are you planning to travel with family? Holland America or Princess Cruises are rather kid-friendly. And of course, let’s not forget about high quality which is represented by lines like Regent and Crystal. But still they are also more expensive.

4. Prices. I’m sure you suppose that all you should do is to multiply the daily rate for a stateroom taking into consideration the number of nights. But there are also such factors as airfare to and from the originating port, shore excursions and the costs of incidentals (spa salons, alcohol, etc.), unless the ship is all-inclusive. Most cruise lines offer discounts for booking far in advance. By the way, you also are able to choose the most appropriate cabin. So, start planning your cruise beforehand.

5. On board. Size really matters in this case. Smaller ships can call smaller ports and offer more personalized experience. It is the best choice for nature cruises to the Sea of Corte’s, the Gala’pagos or Antarctica. Cruise West or SeaDream Yachts offer you such opportunities, but entertainment and dining options are limited.

6. Cabin. Inside, outside, balcony… Your itinerary is the first thing you should consider, before choosing a cabin. There is no need in a balcony stateroom if your cruise across the Atlantic, just because there will be only open ocean for days. But Alaskan and Mediterranean cruises provide you with excellent views. In this case, it is necessary to choose the right side of the ship. In Alaska book a cabin on the right (starboard) side of the ship on a northbound cruise and on the left (port) side of the ship on southbound itineraries. Thus, you’ll admire the coastline.

7. Activities. If possible book all the activities in advance. As a rule, popular shore excursions as well as spas procedures on ships often sell out. Ask about discounts if you are booking treatments on days in port.

If you aren’t matched to the line, you probably won’t cruise again. So, plan everything so that there will be no regrets. You also can turn to a travel agent. Moreover, you have already known what things to consider ;)

St. Valentine’s Romantic Travel Stages - Check Yours

February 13th, 2008 Olga Pizza

So, are you in love… or hate this holiday? I have just made a little investigation among my friends (those who adore traveling and always seem to be in love) and I was shocked! Most of them don’t like this day. All they can do is to present an obligatory gift and attend some party… So, where is inspiration, love and care? The answer is that they do such things every day and such holidays are unnecessary because in this case, they are forced to make all these sweet presents. But how about romantic travels?

Well, everything is not so bad as it may seem at first sight. There are three categories (or periods in the relations) when we are eager to take a journey just this day. So, what are the best places for every stage?

We’re Dating

No matter where you go, the first and the most important thing is not to spoil everything. Especially if it is your first trip somewhere together. Just pack wisely and take all the necessary things. And of course, don’t forget about adventures. Of course, going to some unknown country is really exciting, but don’t forget about such trifles as

  • ♥ counting the stars together
  • ♥ staying up all night and watching when sky changing colors at sunrise
  • ♥ You also can climb a tree
  • ♥ find out how long you can kiss underwater
  • ♥ put your toes in the water and do absolutely nothing.

He is Ready to Propose

Are you really ready? Read the best places to propose and don’t forget the main rule: you should be alone… or just pretend it. No relatives or friends - it is just your moment.

  • Niagara Falls, Canada. Every third says that it is the best place for making a proposal. Perhaps it is because of the negative ions which are produced by the roaring waters. They are considered to be powerful aphrodisiacs ;)
  • Eiffel Tower, Paris, France. Comment is superfluous
  • Venetian gondola, Venice, Italy. It is the best choice for romantics. You also can book a serenading gondolier for some musical accompaniment.
  • Wailua Falls, Kauai, Hawaii. Just another incredible place for making this day really memorable. Just follow the tips in the above mentioned stage.

We’re Getting Married

So, it is a bride’s day. It is her day and she can do whatever she wants… even choose the place where to get married. But of course, a bridegroom can remind her about such trivial things as wedding regulations in different countries. For example, what documents are required for you to marry, whether you will need some medical tests, the waiting period and many more.

Let’s not forget that “Love is a journey not a destination.” ;)

Among numerous destinations and wonderful countries, perhaps, all of us are eager to visit such a mysterious city as Venice. Find out whether it is really so amazing to take a gondola ride on the Grand Canal. And of course, enjoy so popular Carnival of Venice. Do you know that February is just the time of Venice Carnival? So, you can find an appropriate and even astonishing costume rental, choose some incredible mask and… what? What are the things Venetians offer us to do during the celebrating?

One of the most ancient tradition was the Flight of the angel, the opening of the Carnival. How is it possible? A tightrope walker had to reach the seat of the Doge (the governor) from St.Mark’s Bell Tower. As a rule, there are several days of celebrating so everyone will have enough time to choose the things which he adores the most of all. Moreover, there are really a lot of things to choose from. The first evening is perfect for those who dream about the above mentioned gondola tour. Everything starts at San Marco - calle Vallaresso, than journey along Grand Canal and dinner in some popular restaurant will end the evening. Don’t forget that all these you should do in costume, so choose comfortable one.

“I just want to keep silent and relax, so that someone entertain me during the whole evening” In such a way one of my friends explains me why we should go to the cinema once a week at least. If you also enjoy to observe and do nothing except admiring the beauty, a dinner in the candle-lit setting of palazzo Pisani-Moretta and enjoying frescoes of Giovanbattista Tiepolo is the best choice for you. You also will be entertained by mimes, magicians and acrobats. Two orchestras will play for the whole evening, so you still can change your mind and enjoy dances till early morning.

The old Casino of Commerce in the ‘Procuratie Vecchie’, looking straight to the San Marco Church and the Doge’s Palace. It is just another chance to dance and have an excellent dinner. And of course, let’s not forget about the greatest opportunity to make friends with a lot of people wearing masks.

Inspire? So, how about prices? They differ in accordance with menu, activities and places from 420 to 50 euros. Carnival of Venice 2008 lasts from 26th January to 5th February. So, you still have time to choose a costume.
